[dos] shkurtim për d isk o perating s ystem sistem operativ i diskut apo shkurt DOS (një lloj sistemi operativ për kompjuter)SISTEMI OPERATIV I DISKUT - MS-DOS- Softueri përbëhet nga programet e ndryshme kompjutrike, të cilat përbëhen nga një mori udhëzimesh të cilat në mënyren e vet i diktojnë kompjutrit se çka duhet dhe si duhet vepruar në situata të caktuara. Urdhërat kompjutrit i jepen nepërmjet të tastierës apo miut. Programi i cili i nevoitet kompjutrit për të komunikuar me shfrytëzuesin në njërën anë dhe harduerit e programeve aplikative në anën tjetër e që është i arkivuar në disk, quhet sistem operativ i diskut apo shkurt DOS ( Disk Operating System). DOS-i, siç thamë, ndodhet i arkivuar në diskun e ngurtë dhe me rastin e çdo ndezjeje të kompjutrit ai lexohet në kujtesën oparative. Pa leximin e DOS-it (apo të ndonjë sistemi tjetër operativ) kompjutri nuk funksionon fare.DOS-i është një sistem operativ për IBM PC dhe PC të tjera kompatibile me të. DOS-i emërtohet me parashtesa të ndryshme: MS DOS ( MicroSoft Disk Operating System), PC DOS ( Personal Computer Disk Operating System) dhe DR DOS ( Digital Research Disk Operating System). Kryesisht, nuk ka dallime të mëdha ndërmjet këtyre programeve.Natyrisht, ekziston një numër i madh i programeve operative siç janë: CP/M (program i dikurshëm për procesorët tetë bitësh 8080, Z80 etj.; pastaj programi operativ UNIX, WINDOWS.
